Vendor names different from Contact list to Product Library

Why are the vendor names in my Contact list different from the vendor names in the Product Library? Is this from merging duplicate vendors and they are not updated universally? When i try to search on a vendor I cannot find products. This is frustrating and makes using the system difficult.
